No two people have matching fingerprints. Even identical twins, who may have very similar prints, have small differences that make each unique. The tips of our fingers have friction ridges on them that form a pattern unique to the individual. Even if your hands are dry and clean, the perspiration in your hand adheres to the friction ridges in your fingers. When you touch glass and other surfaces, you leave your prints behind. Most of the times these fingerprints are not visible until they are dusted with fingerprint powder, which adheres to the print and makes it visible.

You Will Need :

  • Starch powder
  • 1/4 measuring cup
  • Plastic container with lid
  • Candle
  • Matches
  • Knife
  • Small porcelain dish

Process :

Measure 1/4 cup starch powder and pour it into a plastic containerLight a candle and then hold the porcelain dish over it, so the flame makes contact with the dish. Use a pot holder to hold the dish if the flame is making the dish hot. Watch the bottom of the dish and wait for a layer of black soot to formScrape the soot from the bottom of the dish using a knife. Collect the soot in the measuring cup so you know how much you have. Repeat the process of putting the dish in the flame and scraping the soot until you have 1/4 cup of soot in the measuring cupPour the soot into the container with the starch powder and mix it wellStore the fingerprint powder in the closed plastic container until you are ready to use it
If you want to identify fingerprints on a black surface, or that of another dark color, make a white fingerprint powder instead. Mix 1/4 cup starch powder with 1/4 cup baby powder instead of soot. To lift a powdered fingerprint from its surface, cover the dusted print with clear tape. Carefully remove the tape and stick it onto a light-colored card if you are using black powder, or a dark-colored card if you are using white powder. Powdered graphite, which you can find in the key section of most hardware stores, can also be mixed with starch powder or talcum powder in the same proportions to make a fingerprint powder. To make a fingerprint visible on a surface, dust it generously with fingerprint powder and then gently blow off the excess powder. A clean dry paintbrush works well for fingerprint dusting.
